The London Underground is a public rapid transit system serving London and some parts of the adjacent counties of Buckinghamshire, Essex and Hertfordshire. PCMS Engineering worked with the fleet at London Underground to undertake a rail thermal imaging survey of electrical equipment as part of a comprehensive reliability review.
PCMS engineers performed the thermal survey of the electrical equipment within the carriages using a Flir T250 thermal camera. The survey indicated that 22 out of the 26 carriages required no further action. However, in four cases further investigation was recommended as a result of the discovery of hot connectors or unusually high loading.
Faults such as these could ultimately lead to in-service failure of the carriages concerned resulting in performance penalties from London Underground, customer dissatisfaction and general chaos on the network.
As a results of the reliability review by PCMS Engineering, London Underground was able to plan repairs and avoid costly downtime.
