Oil Analysis For The Rail Industry

The availability, safety and reliability of your fleet of trains are more than likely your top priority if you are a fleet operator in the rail industry. An effective oil analysis programme should be the primary tool for all maintenance personnel looking to minimise disruption, delays and reduce maintenance costs.

By performing regular oil sampling and analysis, rail operators can make quicker and more informed maintenance decisions; such as when to change a train’s oil or to determine fuel leaks.

From sampling to reporting, our complete oil analysis service enables our clients in the rail industry to improve the reliability of their vehicles.

How our oil analysis service works

Our experienced lab staff work alongside your maintenance personnel to recommend the appropriate level of analysis and tailor analytical output from the laboratory to your exact requirements.

As soon as our laboratory analysts have analysed your samples, an email notification is made to nominated client users to advise that results have been uploaded to OMEGA.

Component, industry and site-specific alarm sets allow bespoke and relevant interpretation and recommendations. These recommendations are based on knowledge and/or industry best practices, derived from years of experience in the field.

Furthermore, any serious defect conditions discovered during the analysis will be immediately notified to the nominated client interface by telephone.

A Proven Track Record

We have decades of experience in providing oil testing and analysis to clients in the rail industry. We work with operators such as Network Rail, Alstrom and Arriva to provide a managed oil analysis service. You can read some of our success stories below.

Elemental Analysis Identifies Incorrect Oil Type on a Fleet of Trains for Global Operator

The train operator was able to pinpoint an increase in phosphorus levels.

Rail Oil Analysis Prevents Costly Downtime for Major Train Operator in West Midlands

Oil analysis was used to investigate root-cause of constant turbo repairs.

Vibration Monitoring Improves Bearing Maintenance Schedule at Network Rail

Vibration analysis determines defect within axle bearing.

“PCMS’ strengths are their staff quality and turnaround times. They have really evolved in the past few years and strengthened certain areas where they needed to like the thermal side and also brought in different product into the mix. As a result, we have been successful in selling their services into other sites.

“The structure there is really good. They have people that really do know what they are talking about. Jade (Laboratory Manager) for example was a complete revelation.”

Pete L, Engineering Director.

  • How long does it take to get my oil analysis results?

We aim to process oil samples in 1-3 business days in order for you to make time-critical decisions. However, we aim to analyse all oil samples as soon as possible.

Urgent samples can be processed in the same day with prior agreement/communication with the lab.

  • What is included in the oil sample kit?

Oil sampling kits include pre-paid return envelope, bottle, bottle label, component information ticket, sample tubing and small zip plastic bag. We can provide a sample pump at a cost of £25 per pump.

  • How do I take my sample?

Before taking any samples make sure the bottle, tubing and syringe/pump are free from any source of contamination. This is essential in ensuring a representative sample of the oil to provide you with the most accurate results possible.

    You must also:

    • Sample the agitated oil / after running component at least 10 minutes.
    • Sample the oil at operating temperatures.
    • Do not allow external contamination, e.g. dirt / water to enter the sample.
    • Check remaining oil level and top up as required.
  • How do I get my oil analysis results?

You will be notified by email when your results are ready. We can issue a PDF report or exception report as required.

You will also have access to our free web-based reporting platform, OMEGA, where you can view results, history, export reports and trend data.

  • How much does oil analysis cost?

The cost per sample for the kit and analysis would depend on the volume and type of samples including carriage cost for delivery of the kits.
